Father Dave Smith and Una Mu have been awarded the 2009 Marrickville Citizen of the Year.
Father Dave is the reverend at Holy Trinity Church and also runs Holy Trinity Gym in Dulwich Hill. “I think of myself as a servant of this community and it means a great deal to me that other people value my work to break down the barriers of prejudice. I think this award is an affirmation of skills. This has resulted in reduced youth violence, the community’s desire for diversity, tolerance and acceptance,” Father Dave said. Father Dave also works hard to build bridges in the community that transcend cultural and religious barriers. Recently, he marched and spoke at two rallies to call for justice in for Gaza in the Middle East.
Young Citizen of the Year Una Mu is a Liaison Officer at Marrickville High School.
Mayor of Marrickville, Sam Iskander, presented the awards at Council’s Australia Day celebrations, which were held at Enmore Park on 26 January. “I would like to congratulate both Father Dave and Una on their invaluable contribution to our community. Their concern for the rights, welfare and wellbeing of others, particularly our young people, is an inspiration to us all,” Clr Iskander said. “Citizen of the Year is an enormous privilege.”
