Inspirational Citizens – The Valley Times, January 29th 2009

Holy Trinity Church Reverend Father Dave Smith and Marrickville High School Pacific Islander Community Liaison Officer Una Mu have done the community proud.

Father Dave was named Marrickville’s Citizen of the Year and Una was named the Young Citizen of the Year at the council’s Australia Day Celebrations in Enmore Park on Monday.

Marrickville Mayor Sam Iskandar presented the awards to recognise their significant contribution to the local community.

“Both Father Dave and Una have made a difference in our community,” Cr Iskandar said. “Father Dave has been working with our young people for the past 18 years. He reaches young people through sport, teaching boxing, kickboxing and wrestling skills to local youth at Holy Trinity Gym in Dulwich Hill. This has resulted in reduced youth violence in the area. He has also worked to promote understanding between different cultural and religious groups.”

Una is a representative on the Marrickville Youth Council and a youth representative on Council’s Sister Cities Committee.  “She is an inspirational role model for other young people in our community,” Cr lskandar said.
